Presentation of the annual research residencies at Iméra, Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University

The most classical and widespread model of residency, it concerns residencies, lasting 5 or 10 months, of scientists and/or artists who are laureates of the annual general call for applications or of other calls for applications such as those led by the RFIEA, Réseau français des instituts d’études avancées, including the call for FIAS, programme of research residencies of the French Institutes for Advanced Studies.

Individual projects anchored in Iméra’s research programmes

Within this framework, the selected scientific projects are individual and are part of one of Iméra’s four research programmes and, in part, take shape within chairs co-financed and run with one of Iméra’s partners, whether they are national research organisations (Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), institutes from the Aix-Marseille academic site (Sciences Po Aix, Institute of Language, Communication and the Brain (ILCB), Institut Cancer et Immunologie (ICI), Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMSE), etc. ) or cultural institutions (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (Mucem).

Internationalization of research

In accordance with Iméra’s mission of internationalisation of research, Iméra residents are affiliated with foreign institutions and/or art scenes, anywhere in the world. They must not have lived more than 12 months in France in the three years preceding their application. They are generally housed in one of the flats on the Iméra site, and may be hosted there with their families.

The annual general call for applications

Every year, the Iméra, Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA) of Aix-Marseille University, opens 11 residencies of 5 or 10 months, dedicated to scientists and/or artists. These are distributed over four programmes («Arts & Sciences: Indisciplined Knowledges», «Interdisciplinary Explorations», «Mediterranean» and «Necessary Utopias»). Any interested artist and/or scientist can only apply for one of the following positions:

Carole Baudin is the holder of the CNRS/LEST/Iméra Chair “the worlds of labour” (2023-24). Her research project at Iméra aims to explore the sensitive dimensions of evolving work. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, the study highlights the impact of transformations on perceptions, sensations, and sensitivities involved in professional practices.

William Sacher is the holder of the IRD/Iméra Chair in Sustainable Development. His research project at Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, aims to establish an innovative connection between the concepts and methods of environmental economics, ecological economics, and geosciences. The main objective of the project is to develop new interdisciplinary indicators and tools to assess the “sustainability” of large-scale mining in the Global South.

Laure Astourian is the Mucem/Iméra Fellow for the academic year 2023-24. Her research project at Iméra explores the ethnographic tradition in French cinema during the 1960s and links post-war cinema and television to the ethnographic tradition of MNATP. Her first book, The Ethnographic Optic: Jean Rouch, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, and the Turn Inward in 1960s French Cinema, will be published by Indiana University Press in June 2024

Josune Urrutia Asua is the holder of the Research-Creation in oncology and immunology – ICI/Iméra Chair for the academic year 2023/24. Her research project at Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, showcases the power of drawing and graphic narratives as innovative tools in the realm of scientific exploration, particularly in oncology and immunology.

Davide Grasso is the holder of Transregional studies – EHESS/Iméra Chair. His research project at Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, explores the political philosophy of the Syrian-Kurdish Movement and the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria (AANES), providing valuable insights into democratic autonomy and the pursuit of democratic modernity in the Euro-Mesopotamian space.The study delves into the concepts of “democratic autonomy” and “democratic modernity” as utopian ideals guiding this movement.

Christiaan De Beukelaer is the FIAS / Iméra resident fellow for the academic year 2023-24. His research project at Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, aims to explore how ships transporting cargo under sail can operate sustainably.
