Research project

Embodied archives of memory, or how migrants remember. Historical consciousness and traumatic events on the Mediterranean’s borders

Project summary

The research concerns three profiles of the migratory experience:

– the variables (cultural, religious, political) determining, during the migratory experience, the forms of memory and forgetting, and their relationship with questions of suffering and cure ;

– the way in which the body reproduces memory and the social bond, through what we might call embodied archives, among which symptoms and illness take on the role of counter-memory in Lipsitz’s sense;

– the dialectic between memory and forgetting, and the moral economies of lying among refugees and asylum seekers, while asking the question: what does it mean for these subjects to have to invent dates, names, painful events, relationships and emotions, and thus live in a world of experiences without references, to the point of inventing a parallel biography (or even: memory)?
