Recommendations for submitting an application to the “Interdisciplinary
Explorations” program
1. The research project must have a content relevant to the intention of spending a research stay in an institute for advanced study based in Marseille.
2. The research project must have a content relevant to the thematic lines of the “Interdisciplinary Explorations” program.
Application
and Residency Conditions 2025-26
As part of the Interdisciplinary Explorations program, Iméra offers a chair in collaboration with the Institute of Language, Communication, and the Brain (ILCB). The ILCB’s research focuses on the brain and cognitive foundations of language and communication.
Interdisciplinary research at ILCB is divided into 4 research programs:
- Development and evolution, focusing on the origin of language in individuals and different animal species.
- Neural and cognitive dynamics of language and conversation, with a focus on the dynamics enabling communication.
- Quantification and mathematical modeling of dynamic neural and cognitive phenomena.
- Language pathologies and their treatment.
Applications may concern any of these 4 research areas and should preferably involve collaboration between different ILCB research units.
- Application deadline: October 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM (French time)
- Residency duration: 5 or 10 months between September 2025 and July 2026
Proposed residency periods (candidate’s choice, multiple choices possible):
- 10-month residency: from September 1, 2025 to July 3, 2026
- 5-month residency in the first semester: from September 1, 2025 to January 30, 2026
- 5-month residency in the second semester: from February 9, 2025 to July 3, 2026
Applications are open to confirmed researchers from all disciplines, holding a work contract (permanent or not) in a foreign university or research institution. Eligible candidates must meet the following conditions:
- Not have resided in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years preceding the call for applications
- Hold a Ph.D. or doctorate
- Have a work contract (permanent or not) in a foreign university or research institution
- Present a research project related to the theme “Language, Communication, and Brain.”
The chair holder receives a monthly allowance of 2500 euros.
They also benefit from travel expense coverage and free accommodation on the Iméra site.
The evaluation criteria include, but are not limited to:
- The candidate’s background
- The research project
- The interdisciplinary aspect
- The potential for interactions with the following laboratories: LPL (UMR 7309), LPC (UMR 7290), LIF (UMR 7279), LNC (UMR 7291), INT (UMR 7289), LIA (EA 4128), INS (INSERM 1106), LSIS (UMR 6168), I2M (UMR 7373), ISM (UMR 7287).
- Scientific excellence and the originality of the proposed series of public lectures
The online application file consists of the following documents:
- The completed application form (mandatory fields).
- Files to upload:
- A curriculum vitae including a list of publications
- A presentation of the research project (maximum 5 pages) followed by a selective bibliography
- Optional: A support letter from a researcher or professor from the Aix-Marseille site and/or a letter of reference from someone who has played a decisive role in the scientific career of the candidate.
The ILCB (Institute of Language, Communication, and the Brain) comprises 10 research units (LPL, LPC, INS, INT, LNC, ISM, LIS, LIA, I2M, PRISM) and 8 experimental platforms (fMRI, MEG, EEG, TMS, primatology, virtual reality, baby lab, speech experimentation center).
It brings together around 200 permanent researchers across the Aix-Marseille-Avignon site. Its scientific project focuses on the brain and cognitive foundations of language and communication. ILCB integrates knowledge from various disciplines: linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, computer science, mathematics, and medicine.
It aims to study language production and perception not only in controlled contexts but also to open new perspectives for studying its use in more natural settings. ILCB also offers support for experiments with a dedicated data analysis and processing service, comprising 5 scientific computing and experimentation engineers.
