Research project

Rêver la Méditerranée, an anthropological and artistic research project on dreams in Marseille’s northern neighborhoods (in collaboration with anthropologist Arianna CECCONI).

Project summary

The aim of this research project is to explore the interpretations, beliefs and social uses of dreams in different communities from Mediterranean countries, all living in the same place: Marseille’s Quartiers Nord.

The first is an anthropological investigation of the sites of Saint-Antoine, Plan d’Aou, la Bricarde and Kallisté. The study will be comparative, highlighting what each community has in common as much as what they all have in common. The hypothesis that will serve as our starting point is that dream experiences and narratives represent a “point of view” for analyzing individual histories, and the socio-historical phenomena of different Mediterranean cultures.

Secondly, we plan to carry out in situ dream laboratories and workshops involving the visual artist Tuia Cherici (such collaboration has already been tried out in 2011 in Helsinki, and in 2012 in Florence and Bologna -http://www.oniroscopes.blogspot.fr), as well as the creation of an audio-visual dream archive on the link between dreams and the Mediterranean.
