Groups and networks of intellectuals in the Mediterranean between the wars.
Project summary
This is an in-depth, comparative study of two groups of intellectuals, in France (Marseille – Algiers) and Greece (Lesbos – Asia Minor) during the interwar period. The study will focus (i) on the modes of formation, activities and possible relationships of the two groups, (ii) on the symbolic uses of the Mediterranean, according to their texts, in each different socio-political context. The study will be carried out within the framework of cultural history and comparative literature, and principally within the framework of the history of intellectuals in the Mediterranean: study of the ways in which groups of intellectuals were formed and functioned in France and Greece during the inter-war period. Methodology: Archival research in Marseille, application of the network concept (social sciences) to cultural history.
