Thinking the Tunisian revolution.
Project summary
The unforeseen and unpredictable nature of the recent political events shaking Tunisia and many other countries in the Maghreb and Middle East region calls for a rethinking of the paradigms constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries with the aim of understanding structural changes in relation to the construction of the nation-state and contemporary social movements. By situating the Revolution in its unprecedented historical context, and by adopting an approach that is both comparative – between different countries and conjunctures – and critical – breaking with the dominant schemas of the social sciences – the aim is to identify the complexity of an ongoing phenomenon that calls for the reinvention of new forms of participatory democracy on a global scale.
