Research project

Intellectual life in the Maghreb and al-Andalus: an anthology

Project summary

Writing an anthology of intellectual life in the Maghreb and al-Andalus is first and foremost a reconstruction of an episode in the intellectual life of Arab-Muslim civilization. It is not a question here of writing or rewriting the history of thought in this region, but rather of preparing a selection of examples of this intellectual life. The examples are the lives and works of a number of thinkers from this part of the world. Some of them are well known, others are less, or rather, unknown. The aim is propaedeutic, as it attempts to make a number of thinkers accessible, even if much of the anthology touches on almost anonymous names. The intention was to include all kinds of rational thought, whether in prose or verse. However, the reader will discover the names (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) of philosophers and scientists, theologians and jurists, as well as those of men of literature, poets and Sufis.
