Jérémie Foa, author of Survivre. Une histoire des guerres de religion (Surviving: A History of the Wars of Religion), has been enjoying growing media success since the release of his book on September 13, 2024. Currently in residence at Iméra for research, he has received widespread acclaim, notably from Roger Chartier, professor emeritus at the Collège de France, who described his essay in Le Monde as “a work of breathtaking scholarship, written with liveliness and elegance.”

In this essay, Foa revisits the Wars of Religion in the 16th century through the lens of survival strategies used by Protestants and Catholics. He explores the unsettling proximity between Catholic perpetrators and their Protestant victims, highlighting an “elusive otherness” where those who resemble each other become mortal enemies. Foa focuses on case studies, revealing the tactics of concealment and the difficulty of displaying sincere faith under the constant threat of death.

Alongside promoting his book, La Marseillaise highlights Foa’s work at Iméra on the climatic impacts of the 16th century, often overlooked in favor of political and religious strife. Foa will also resume his monthly lectures, Les Anachroniques, at the Mucem on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM.
