Shaping new artistic narratives and new imaginary worlds
The Mediterranean, as a crossroads of exchange, has always been an area of great cultural wealth. Today, in the digital age, technologies and network dynamics are transforming the creation, dissemination and reception of contemporary art created there. The aim of this study day is to explore how digital tools and practices are shaping new artistic narratives and new imaginaries, facilitating new collaborations and questioning the local realities specific to the different territories of the Mediterranean basin.
In a globalised world, these creations, while rooted in local realities, often act as a critical mirror. They question the social, political and economic issues specific to different Mediterranean territories, tackling major themes such as conflict, inequality and environmental emergencies. Questions of identity also figure prominently, in terms of belonging to a place, a community, a diaspora, or the way in which the Mediterranean shapes these plural identities. These creations are also rooted in strong cultural traditions, where orality, storytelling, materiality and craft play a central role.
An exploration of research, artistic practices, initiatives and networks
This one-day event is designed to explore the research, artistic practices, initiatives and networks emerging around the relationship between art and digital technology in the Mediterranean. By bringing together researchers, artists, cultural players and digital specialists, the aim is to reveal the creative ecosystems that are being built, the unprecedented alliances deployed thanks to connected technologies, and the way in which these dynamics are reconfiguring cultural exchanges in the region.
By examining academic, artistic, digital and institutional networks, this one-day event looks at the Mediterranean as a relational space in constant reconfiguration – where digital practices are deployed as means of creation, levers for cooperation, tools for emancipation or resistance, opening up new ways of inhabiting, narrating and representing the contemporary world.
The study day Imaginaires connectés. Art, digital and networks in the contemporary Mediterranean is organised by Jean-Paul Fourmentraux, professeur des universités at the Centre Norbert Elias and Mathilde Nourisson-Moncey, ATER at TELEMMe, in partnership with CHRONIQUES.
