Synopsis

Following workers who move far from their families, crossing with them the highly dangerous U.S.-Mexico border, traveling between several states to harvest crops in extreme conditions: in order to convey the experience of Mexican farmworkers, Seth M. Holmes dedicated himself to sharing and enduring their daily lives. This allowed him to vividly narrate their joys and sufferings, as well as the physical trials of itinerant labor. He reports on the fate reserved for them in the farms and, when their bodies break, in medical facilities providing them with very mediocre care.

But this striking anthropological investigation offers much more. Behind the fresh fruits that make up any healthy diet, it exposes the economic and social structures of the exploitation of migrants’ bodies. It highlights the violence and the weight of racial hierarchies: a form of segregation that modern economies accommodate.
