On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Enrico Donaggio, scientific director of Iméra and head of the “Necessary Utopias” program, will deliver a lecture in Aix-en-Provence titled “The Working Class in 19th Century England.” This lecture is part of the 2024 seminar series of the European Observatory of Work Narratives, focusing on “The Multiple Origins of Worker Inquiry and Its Transformations.”

Donaggio will explore the working class situation in 19th century England through the lens of Friedrich Engels’ 1842 investigation in Manchester. Engels, as a direct observer of the workers’ living and working conditions, provided a groundbreaking analysis in his work The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845), highlighting the impact of emerging capitalism on workers. The lecture will also focus on Engels’ method of inquiry and its lasting influence on Marxist, syndicalist, and social science movements.

This event is open to the public and can be attended remotely. It will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Room 201 of the Cube, ALLSH, Aix-en-Provence.
