conference debat catherine benoit 08012025

A conference-debate is being organised on Wednesday, January 8th at 7.30pm by the Grande librairie internationale de Marseille on the subject of the fatal crossings of Comorian nationals in the Mozambique Channel and the Mediterranean.

Catherine Benoît and the “La parole aux morts” collective

This conference-debate will include contributions by Catherine Benoît, Professor of Anthropology at Connecticut College and former Iméra resident, holder of the EHESS / Iméra Chair – Transregional Studies in 2022-2023, as well as by the ‘La parole aux morts’ collective, a Marseille-based group whose aim is to describe, analyse and record shipwrecks, deaths and disappearances in the Mozambique Channel.

They will discuss the conditions of independence of the Comoros and the departmentalisation of Maore/Mayotte, as well as the causes of these thousands of fatal crossings and their invisibilisation. Finally, they will discuss how the French government’s response to cyclone Chido on Maore/Mayotte can only lead to an increase in these shipwrecks.
