Presentation of a reform eagerly awaited by French midwives

The TrEMa consortium (Transformation des études de maïeutique i.e Transformation of midwifery studies) is holding a one-day meeting to discuss the new 2024-2025 reform of midwifery studies.

From the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, the midwifery training structures (hospital schools, departments, UFRs) will be responsible for implementing a new study programme based on the very recent national reference framework, broken down into six areas of expertise, a fundamental foundation, a personalised student pathway and the defence of a professional practice thesis. This reform introduces significant changes compared with the last overhaul, which conferred the Master’s degree on graduates: extension of the length of studies with the addition of a short third cycle, a framework based on competencies, and the award of the title of Doctor in Midwifery.

The aim of the TrEMa consortium is to use educational research to document the process of curricular change in maieutics studies.

  • How have the teaching teams adapted to the new training framework?
  • How do midwifery teachers, students and clinicians perceive the reform?
  • How do midwife teachers implement it?
  • What obstacles and levers have been identified?
  • How are the targeted skills assessed?
  • What transformative changes have been made to the training system?
  • What impact does the new title of doctor of midwifery have on the various players involved in perinatal care: midwives themselves, students, other health professionals, including doctors in particular?

This day will be of great interest to the community of perinatal teachers and professionals, and more broadly to teachers, trainers, professionals and users of the healthcare system.
