As part of the Mediterranean Program, Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, and the Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World at the University of Edinburgh are organizing a study day on May 30 and 31, 2024, in Marseille. The event aims to rethink migration governance and the urban reception of migrants in a context of poly-crisis (political, socio-economic, environmental). Open to the public.

Study day at Iméra/University of Edinburgh : The Méditerranean Nexus of Migrations from Africa to Europe. From solidarities to infra-political struggles

May 30-31, 2024 at Iméra, Maison des Astronomes (2 Place Leverrier, 13004, Marseille)

Most common studies on migrations tend to prioritize institutional mechanisms, focusing on the organizations involved in sorting, controlling, and expelling foreigners. In contrast, there is a relative scarcity of analyses examining the interventions of local actors who attempt to counterbalance rejection policies. Existing studies, particularly in the Global South, have primarily focused on a security approach to migrations in Muslim worlds and border regimes, defining migration issues in terms of control.

In this context, this event aims to shed light on migration phenomena and their reception in Africa and Europe through the lens of migratory experiences, dynamics of solidarity, and infra-political struggles. This study day will focus on migration governance, reexamining the practices and engagement of non-state actors and the various types of rights they produce for migrant populations in both the Global South and North. The analysis will cover multiple levels, including national, regional, and municipal. Given the European Union’s externalization of border controls, we will examine the outsourcing of migrant reception to local actors and civil society organizations. How can we uncover new practices of political subjectivation in the European and African migration contexts? Furthermore, how are new struggles for the reception and inclusion of migrants structured in both the Global North and South
