Meso-Level Perspectives on Paid Work in Contemporary Societies

This workshop is a collaboration between the Laboratoire d’Economie et de Sociologie du Travail (LEST, amu/CNRS)the Worlds of Labours chair (LEST/Iméra), the ERC project DESPO (University of Milan), and the Chair of Political Economy (University of Bonn). It aims to explore both the material and immaterial aspects of work. It will examine how various work contexts—ranging from communities and workplaces to norms, culture, and trends—shape individuals’ opportunities over the course of their lives.

The event will address the role of paid work in societies marked by deindustrialisation, AI development, skills mismatches, and the growing misalignment between labour market demands and supply. Sessions will include cross-disciplinary research on political behaviour, emotional and feminist perspectives on labour, labour market preparation, cooperatives, and innovations in working time across both the global South and North. In addition to the academic sessions, the workshop will feature a site visit and discussions on the evolving dynamics of labour in contemporary societies.
