Brian Sandberg, Senior Fellow 2025-2026 and Director of Iméra’s Mediterranean programme, will take part in the “Change the world?” day around the exhibition “Don Quichotte, histoire de fou, histoire d’en rire”, currently on show at the Mucem. The day is being organised in partnership with Iméra and the Institute’s Mediterranean programme.

This cultural and scientific event, aimed at the general public, brings together leading figures from the worlds of literature, art, film and the social sciences to discuss the ‘sad figure’ of Don Quixote, who is as funny as he is moving.

The day’s conference will be followed by a literary evening of “Rêver debout” with writer Lydie Salvayre and all the day’s participants.

Laughing in the face of History’s violence

Brian Sandberg, Senior Fellow 2025-2026, Director of the Mediterranean Programme at Iméra, and Professor of History at Northern Illinois University, is a specialist in France, Europe and the Mediterranean in the modern era. His talk is entitled “Laughter in the face of the violence of History”.
