mimed borges janvier 2026

Monday, January 12th, 2026: 10am – 12pm

Marcelo Borges will be presenting his research project Migrations and Emotions in a Globalized World, 1870-2015, at a special session to be held at Iméra.

Emotions have played a crucial role in the life experience of migrants and in the cultural, social, and political dynamics generated by people’s mobility. This talk presents a framework for this analysis and shares some examples from a book-in-progress. Bringing together the perspective of migration history and the history of emotions, the book considers how emotions associated with migration have been constructed, negotiated, and deployed over time. It seeks to uncover the emotional dynamics that contributed to shaping the experiences of migrants and their families and the ways that migrants have been perceived by diverse societies in different historical moments. The analysis considers the emotional dynamics of migration over a long historical period—from the growth of transoceanic labor mobility ushered by the expansion of capitalist and imperialism and the consolidation of nation-states in the 1870s to the alleged migration crisis of 2015.

His talk will be discussed by Céline Regnard, university professor at TELEMMe and deputy director of the MMSH.

  • Monday, January 12th, 2026 from 10am to 12pm
  • Conference room at the Maison Neuve (1st floor), Iméra.
  • You can follow the session on Zoom.

MiMed, places and territories of migration in the Mediterranean

MiMed is a research network of the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’Homme (MMSH), studying migration in the Mediterranean, a major issue in contemporary society. It examines the movement of people, practices and ideas across time and space in the Mediterranean, analysing local and international dynamics from a historical perspective. Beyond the Mediterranean, the network develops comparative analyses with other regions of the world to enrich its global understanding of migratory phenomena.
