Research project

Violence and Islam. Deconstructing Islamic fundamentalist thought in the light of the work of Mohammed Arkoun

Project summary

The research project consists in deconstructing the postulates of Islamist discourse based on Arkoun’s work. Islamist discourse is essentially based on four axioms, namely (1) the re-establishment of an Islamic state, (2) the application of sharia, (3) the immutable and anhistorical nature of the Koranic text and (4) the biologization of the role of women based on the hierarchical relationship between the sexes. For example, the terrorist organization that claims the appellation of Islamic State (Daesh) provided daily during its creation (2014-2017) the staging of a sacralized violence in the name of a truth founded on these Islamist postulates promoted – in defiance of their historical character – to the rank of essential values.
