Research project

Global circulation and local marketing of second-hand clothes. A comparison between the Mexican-American border and the Mediterranean region

Project summary

On the basis of my research experience on the economics of selling Asian products and used clothing on the Mexico-US border, I propose to analyze the trade in second-hand clothes in the Mediterranean region, as a manifestation of the phenomenon of globalization from below. The questions raised are: how is the trade in second-hand clothes organized in the Mediterranean region? How is it linked to global trade flows? What are the social relationships at local level that explain the consumption of second-hand clothes? What continuities and differences are there between the trade in second-hand clothes in the Mediterranean and on the border between Mexico and the United States? To this end, I propose the organization of an interdisciplinary and regional seminar, and field trips to develop case studies.
