Research project

Theatrical adaptation of André Schwartz-Bart’s Mulâtresse Solitude.

Project summary

By adapting La Mulâtresse Solitude for the stage, with the kind permission of Simone Schwarz-Bart, in the context of the work offered by Iméra, we are able to draw a parallel between this major work and what, since 2011, has been the current situation on the Mediterranean coast, where people are seeking their own definition of freedom by learning democracy, and finding the strength to express themselves and throw off their chains. Solitude, André Schwarz-Bart’s heroine, a historical figure who fought for her freedom and that of her brothers and sisters in misfortune, has become a universal symbol, even at the risk of her own life. It seems to me that a very large proportion of the young people who are today building a new definition of democracy, sometimes not without difficulty, can lay claim to her. The whole point of this work is to take shape in a culture, a country. Understand a context, but at the same time let yourself melt into the local context. The interest will be in being able, through the force of this work, to show through theater the importance of the universality of freedom, which can take on many faces but always starts from the basis of our societies.
