Research project

Natural resources between political use and economic requirement

Summary of the research project

Oil rent is called a curse by some researchers who consider it an obstacle to economic development and the formation of a civil society independent of the state. My project will put forward elements of analysis to introduce institutional reforms that will avoid the disabling character of oil rent. The country under study is Algeria.

Biography

After having been professor of political sociology in Algeria and France, I moved to the United States to continue my research on the construction of the state in relation to ideology and economy. My latest publication is “Radical Arab Nationalism and Political Islam” (Georgetown University Press, 2017) and the next is “Criticism of Muslim religious discourse. The necessary transition from Plato to Kant” (Les Presses de l’Université de Louvain, June 2019).
