Ewan Oiry, holder of the 2023-24, CNRS / LEST / Iméra Chair – The Worlds of Labour, will organize two workshops on January 22, 2024, focusing on relationships between artificial intelligence, work, workers, and society.

Artificial intelligence at the service of labour, workers, and society: a concrete utopia?

22 january 2024 10 am – 1 pm at LEST (35, Avenue Jules Ferry, 13626, Aix en Provence)
22 january 2024 5:30 – 8:00 pm Iméra (Maison des astronomes, 2 place Leverrier, 13004, Marseille)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is pervasive in all discussions. It is primarily presented as a direct and imminent threat to eliminate millions of jobs, replace humans with robots, and ultimately allow robots to take control of our daily lives. However, artificial intelligence, like all technologies invented by humans, could be used in the service of individuals, groups, and societies.

These seminars explore the conditions necessary for artificial intelligence to be developed in the service of employees, their collective expectations, and, more broadly, society. Several questions arise: What exactly is AI? In which areas is it or will it be used? What skills does it threaten? What new skills does it bring about? How do organizations adopt AI? How are their organizational methods and strategies transformed by AI?

These seminars will investigate the conditions for the emergence of an AI that could be developed in the service of work (to make it easier and/or more productive), workers (to better recognize and valorize them), and society. These two seminars are complementary: the first is more oriented towards research, aiming to generate new scientific knowledge on the conditions for the development of artificial intelligence in the service of work, workers, and society. The second seminar is more oriented towards popularization and dissemination, targeting the general public with current knowledge about AI, its development, and its uses.

Our resident research fellow

Ewan Oiry is a Professor of Human Resource Management at ESG-UQAM and holder of the CNRS / LEST / Iméra Chair – The Worlds of Labour (2023-24).

His research project at Iméra, Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University, aims to explore the current developments in the relationship between individuals and society to work, focusing on the management devices mediating recent forms of work relationships. Emphasizing artificial intelligence tools, the study examines how these devices transform work and questions the conditions for designing artificial intelligence in the service of workers.
